Chapter 1137 - 1126: Favoring Daughters Over Sons
Chapter 1137 - 1126: Favoring Daughters Over Sons
Ye Qiu gently placed his hand over He Xixian’s and gave her a tender smile, his voice low yet reassuring: "Don’t worry, I’ve got this."
Mrs. He keenly sensed something was off, and once a thought connected in her mind, she opened her mouth wide: "Xianxian, are you...?"
"Are you what?" Mr. He was more absent-minded; he didn’t catch the implication of his wife’s words nor notice anything unusual about their daughter or son-in-law.
"Are you expecting?" Mrs. He asked in a whisper, as though speaking louder would scare away the baby in her stomach.
He Xixian shyly lowered her head, the blush on her face deepening: "We’re not sure yet, we haven’t had time to check, but I’m a few days late this month."
Now even as careless as he was, Mr. He understood the implication. He never thought that not even at fifty, he would be a grandfather!
Then he couldn’t help but think of his colleagues at work in their sixties and seventies, always sighing over their children’s marriages, and a smile crept across his face. He finally had something to show off to his colleagues; they would be so envious.
He was forty-eight this year, and by the latest, he’d be holding a grandchild at the start of the new year. Perhaps by the time a great-grandchild was born, he’d still be hale and hearty. If he was lucky, he might even witness the birth of a great-great-grandchild, achieving five generations under one roof! What would that mean? How envious would those old fellows be?
With this in mind, Mr. He gazed at his daughter’s belly with growing eagerness. He’d already decided that since the baby’s paternal grandparents weren’t reliable, as a grandfather, he needed to pay extra attention.
If it’s a girl, he’ll spoil her, buying her floral dresses to wear every day. If it’s a boy, he’ll still spoil him, taking him fishing, climbing trees...
"Aren’t we free today? We still have time to go to the hospital for a check-up. The wedding is the day after tomorrow; we’ll need to make some adjustments for the baby’s sake." Ye Qiu never anticipated that his father-in-law would be more enthusiastic and delighted than him. In the end, the whole family had to go to the hospital at the father-in-law’s insistence.
The test results came out quickly, confirming that He Xixian was indeed pregnant. The whole family was as happy as a bunch of fools. The doctors and nurses at the hospital were familiar with such scenes and congratulated them warmly.
"Thank you, thank you!" Ye Qiu was a little overjoyed, with a hundred things to say to He Xixian.
This is his child. He vowed that once the child was born, he would give them the best, but he would also teach them to be a good and kind person, and ensure they lived a happy and fulfilling life.
He’d had enough of such experiences in his childhood and wouldn’t let his child suffer the same grievances.
Some say it takes a lifetime to heal a traumatic childhood, while a happy childhood heals a lifetime. He would protect his child’s growth but never interfere excessively with their choices.
Every person born into this world is an independent personality. No one, except the person themselves, has the right to make choices on their behalf.
Since she wasn’t yet three months along, He Xixian’s pregnancy was kept a secret, but any parts of the wedding harmful to a pregnant woman were removed, and even her high heels were swapped out for flat shoes.
Attentive bridesmaids might have guessed, but they just exchanged knowing smiles without saying anything.
"Cousin, what’s wrong?" Ye Zhe was taken aback as he looked at Ye Qing.
Ye Qing awkwardly pushed back her hair: "I’m Ye Qiu’s biological sister. What, can’t I come?"
Ye Zhe chuckled awkwardly, "That’s not what I meant, it’s just that Uncle and Auntie said no one should come."
As he spoke, he thought to himself, perhaps the person cousin Ye Qiu least wanted to see was this cousin. He wondered if today’s wedding might go wrong; he trusted everyone else, but he couldn’t be too sure about this cousin.
"No matter what, I’m still his sister. He misunderstands me deeply, but I won’t hold it against him," Ye Qing said generously.
Ye Zhe maintained a polite demeanor, but Han Kun lacked patience. He was two years older than Ye Qing, his father was Ye Qing’s uncle, and similar to the Ye Family, the Han Family also favored girls over boys.
Especially Han Family’s grandmother, who favored her granddaughter over her grandson, causing Han Kun’s mother to be long dissatisfied and hold a grudge against Han Hui, the younger sister-in-law.
As a result, influenced by this, Han Kun disliked his cousin Ye Qing from a young age, especially after he started remembering things. Whenever Ye Qing took a liking to something of his, his grandma would make him give it to her, which made him less fond of Ye Qing.
Why should he? They were his toys!
He also clearly remembered an incident where Ye Qing didn’t even like a toy car but insisted on taking it by crying. He watched helplessly as she threw it into the fire, a toy car his father brought back for him from work—a car he loved the most!
Yet his grandparents and father didn’t mind, saying he, as an older brother, should have let his sister have it. Even though he saw Ye Qing smiling at him after tossing the car into the fire, everyone apart from his mom said he was wrong and too petty.
So he knew from a young age that his cousin Ye Qing was bad, acting one way in front of adults and another in front of them.
When he learned his cousin scored top in the college entrance exam, he guessed this cousin would cause trouble; she wouldn’t tolerate any peer outperforming her!
As expected, he later heard about a big argument his cousin had with the family; it turned what should have been a happy graduation party into a mess.
Later, he heard his aunt and uncle talking about how bad and disobedient cousin Ye Qiu was and how he didn’t appreciate the good resources and insisted on going his own way, even saying they wouldn’t care anymore.
He knew there was surely his cousin’s handiwork behind it all. Now seeing his cousin Ye Qiu doing better and better, this cousin couldn’t sit still? Looking to get a piece of the action?
How big is your heart and face? Haven’t you always boasted about being exceptional? Why would you need to feed off your brother?
Didn’t the family offer great resources and jobs to cousin Ye Qiu? Why doesn’t it show on the most favored like you?
"Perhaps it’s not a misunderstanding. I know my cousin, he’s always been straightforward; if someone treats him well, he treats them doubly well. If Ye Qing, dear cousin, you didn’t really do anything wrong to cousin Ye Qiu, why didn’t he personally welcome you? By the way, I’ve been staying at the star-level hotel my cousin arranged these days. He even introduced me to a renowned big company when he heard my current company wasn’t doing well. As his own sister, shouldn’t you be treated equally well?" Han Kun said without holding back.
Ye Qing trembled with anger; she knew this cousin never got along with her since childhood, always reporting her to the adults. Now still annoying, no wonder she never liked him.
